Premier League scores: Newcastle get a road point, Sunderland grab first win

There were plenty of goals and pleasant surprises on Saturday in England.

Nigel Roddis

The Premier League turned what looked to be a pretty dull Saturday into a hugely entertaining set of matches, with each one featuring at least two goals. The biggest results were in Swansea, where Newcastle grabbed a much needed road point, and in Sunderland, where the Black Cats won for the first time this season.

Hull City 2-0 Crystal Palace - Perhaps Hull are back to being nearly unbeatable at home? They turned in one of their best performances of the season on Saturday, though it took them a while to score. Mohamed Diame put the hosts up in the 60th minute and Nikica Jelavic sealed the victory for the Tigers late.

Leicester City 2-2 Burnley - This one featured a lot of poor defending and a dramatic finish. Riyad Mahrez was Leicester's best player, setting up the opener for Jeff Schlupp and scoring one himself. Michael Kightly scored between those goals for Burnley, and his team was chasing the lead for the entire second half. They grabbed their equalizer in the 96th minute, with Ross Wallace scoring a gorgeous free kick.

Liverpool 2-1 West Bromwich Albion - A frustrating first half ended in perfect fashion for Liverpool, who got a goal from Adam Lallana in the 45th minute. WBA equalized on a penalty conceded by Dejan Lovren, but Jordan Henderson found a winner for the Reds. You can find a full match report here.

Sunderland 3-1 Stoke City - For the first time this season, Sunderland grabbed all three points. And because they have so many draws, that moves them all the way up to 12th. Connor Wickham scored just four minutes in, but Stoke found an equalizer through Charlie Adam, uncharacteristically on the break and from inside the box. But Sunderland got a brace from Steven Fletcher, who scored on a corner in the 23rd minute, then again late in the second half.

Swansea City 2-2 Newcastle United - Fans might cease calling for Alan Pardew's head for at least one week after he got a very good point away to a solid Swansea team. Wilfried Bony opened the scoring, but Papiss Cisse answered just before the break. Wayne Routledge put the Swans back in front in the 50th minute, but his team couldn't hold on. Pardew made a couple of subs while Garry Monk stuck with his starting XI, and fresh legs made the difference. Sub Sammy Ameobi set up Cisse's second -- and his fourth in three games -- in the 79th minute.

Aston Villa 0-2 Manchester City - The Citizens needed to wait until the 82nd minute to find their winner, but Yaya Toure found their breakthrough with a brilliant finish. Sergio Aguero added a second late. You can find a full match report here.
