The 2014 Apertura’s edition of the Super Clásico is the most meaningless in the standings in the fixture’s history, but it could be the catalyst that ultimately leads to Chivas Guadalajara winning their shocking battle against relegation.

Chivas currently sit 17th in the league, a stunning 18 points behind league leaders and rivals Club America. Their standing this season doesn’t matter for relegation purposes, but they’ll be in a hole heading into the Clausura as it stands. They’re ahead of Universidad de Guadalajara, but the Leones Negros are in their first season in Liga MX, so each win increases their coefficient significantly more than individual victories do for Chivas. The race between those two sides, Veracruz and Puebla should be down to the wire in the spring, and Chivas would love to add some more points before the transfer window.
America, meanwhile, are facing a potential improbable clásicos sweep. They’re top of the table with only three losses on the season, but two of them have come against city rivals Pumas UNAM and Cruz Azul. If Chivas win on Saturday, it will be the first time since 2011 that America have been swept in clásicos.
The only player sure to miss out for either team is Chivas forward Rafael Marquez Lugo, who has been out all season. America have no players currently listed as injured.
