Napoli have confirmed that winger Lorenzo Insigne is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in their 1-0 win away against Fiorentina on the weekend. Insigne was substituted 25 minutes into the match at the Artemio Franchi, and is almost certain to miss the remainder of the season.
Lorenzo Insigne set for lengthy absence with serious knee injury
The young winger has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.
It is a big blow for the partenopei, with Insigne having been one of the fixtures in Rafael Benítez's first team throughout the campaign. Though he started the season in some pretty lousy form, even being booed by some of the Napoli supporters, he had picked up in the last few weeks, and kept Belgian attacker Dries Mertens out of the starting lineup.
The 23-year-old Neapolitan will now undergo surgery, and will hope to be back for the start of the next season. However, that is the best case scenario, and it’s possible he’ll be out for a little longer. It’s a crushing blow for both Insigne, and Napoli.
