Lionel Messi breaks La Liga’s all-time goalscoring record

No one in the history of La Liga has scored more goals than Messi.

Lionel Messi now stands alone atop La Liga's all-time scoring list.

The Barcelona forward found the net in the first half against Sevilla for his 251st goal in the league, matching the mark set by Telmo Zarra nearly 60 years ago. It came via a direct free kick, and it was an absolutely gorgeous one.

Later in the game, he scored again, notching No. 252 to break the record in the same match.

As remarkable as it is that Messi has broken such a lofty record, it is even more amazing when you consider that he is just 27 years old and made his debut for Barcelona only 10 years ago. And while Messi has just hit the 252-goal mark in the league, he has over 400 professional goals in all competitions for club and country. For good measure, he added a third goal to complete a hat trick after he’d passed Zarra.

Messi’s record is no fluke. He is the best player to ever play in La Liga, and may be the best player to ever play the sport.

Congratulations, Lionel.
