Ghana appoint Avram Grant as manager

Avram Grant is the man charged with getting Ghana through the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Maxwell Konadu guided the Black Stars through their most recent qualifying matches, taking over as caretaker after James Kwesi Appiah left in September.

This isn’t Grant’s first time in charge of a national team. From 2002-2006, he coached the Israel national team, but was unable to take his side to either the Euros or the World Cup.

From there, Grant went on to Chelsea, who finished second in the Premier League and made it to the Champions League final during the year he was in charge. Next came Portsmouth, who finished last the season Grant was at the helm (although their points deduction certainly contributed) but also went to the FA Cup final.

Most recently, Grant managed Serbian side Partizan Belgrade. He was there for only half a season, but helped them to a title. Grant has not managed a side since resigning from Partizan in May 2012.

Ghana failed to make it out of the group stage in Brazil, although they did draw with eventual winners Germany and gave the USMNT a good scare. They did, however, finish top of the group in AFCON qualifying, so Grant is likely to fancy his chances of making a decent run in the tournament.
