MLS adds purple to color library with Orlando City home kit introduction

Orlando City’s first MLS kit is a lot of purple and white with a little bit of gold (and no pager).

Red, white, orange, rave green, yellow, and just about every color in between has been represented in MLS over the course of the league’s history. Purple, however, has never been on that list, at least until now. On Wednesday, 2015 expansion side Orlando City unveiled their brand new home kit for the upcoming season, a kit that is their first under the umbrellas of MLS and adidas.

The template for this shirt is already used by the likes of the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo, among other teams in the league so much of it is territory that has already been explored by kit nerds. The new kit is purple all over with some details that span the gamut from subtle to straightforward and maybe even a little bit ugly.

The shirt features a series of relatively thick, horizontal bands that alternate from the purple color found on the sides, back, and sleeves to a slightly lighter, shinier shade that is almost completely subdued from distance and under different lighting conditions. The neckline features gold trim to tie the kit into the club’s crest and the MLS logo, which can be found on both of the sleeves. The sponsor logos and adidas stripes are all white, completing the use of Orlando City’s badge colors on the shirt.

Speaking of the badge, fans will find a very nice little detail under the logo on the inside of the shirt. Printed under the club’s MLS crest, is a black and white version of the one that they wore in USL Pro from 2010 to 2014. The back of the neck features a raised heat transfer that features the crown from the crest over the words Orlando City. The base of the shirt is where things get a little weird thanks to a very thick white band that acts as a hem the whole way around the shirt.

The shorts that pair the shirt are all purple. The socks match that color and feature a white band at the top of each one. The band is broken up by three relatively thin adidas stripes.
