Mexican soccer continues to dominate soccer in the United States. The latest example is the Liga MX Apertura final between Club America and Tigres, which drew 5.4 million total viewers on Univision on Sunday. That tops any ratings for the Premier League, Champions League, MLS or any other club match in 2014.

The dominance of Mexican soccer in the U.S. is not new. Polls show that the national team is America’s most popular team in any sport and they routinely fill stadiums for matches in the country, as well as put up impressive TV ratings. Liga MX matches regularly out-rate the Premier League as well, but the rating for the final is truly staggering.
The highest rated European match in the U.S. is generally the Champions League final, but Univision’s Liga MX final rating was 55 percent higher than what Fox drew when Real Madrid met Atletico Madrid in May for the European crown. Its rating was also 113 percent higher than the highest rated Premier League match on NBC.
Overall, the Liga MX Apertura Liguilla was the highest rated playoff in Univision history so this was not a one-off. Interest in Mexican soccer continues to grow, and people are flipping the channel to Liga MX more than ever.
