Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres joins the Houston Dynamo

After weeks of speculation, the Houston Dynamo have confirmed that Erick “Cubo” Torres is joining them as a Designated Player.

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

Merry Christmas, Houston Dynamo fans. Your club just got you one heck of a present:

Torres became one of the brightest young talents in Major League Soccer last season, a dynamic goalscorer with a flair for the dramatic. Unfortunately, he played for Chivas USA, the league's worst side and one that folded after the season in order to eventually re-form in to a new Los Angeles franchise.

That left Cubo, who was on loan from Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara, essentially without a home for the time being. MLS wanted to keep him in the league, though, and negotiated a deal with Chivas to accomplish just that. After initial speculation that he'd wind up with the Los Angeles Galaxy or the Seattle Sounders, the Houston Dynamo are the ones who wound up stepping up to bring Torres in.

As reported recently, part of the deal includes an arrangement that keeps Torres with Chivas de Guadalajara on loan for “up to” the next six months. He’ll be taking part in Mexico’s Clausura season that starts in January, hoping to help them finish higher in the table than the 16th place Chivas managed in the Apertura and avoid relegation. He’ll then join the Dynamo in the summer.

It’s a huge signing for Houston, potentially the biggest signing any MLS team will make all winter. While they won’t have him for basically half the season, when he does arrive he has the ability to change games for the Dynamo. His 15 goals last season was all the more impressive in light of how mediocre Chivas’ attack was, and with Houston he could help turn the Dynamo into a force in the Western Conference after they finished twenty points off the pace in the Eastern Conference last season.
