Bundesliga schedule and results, Week 14: can Leverkusen stop Bayern Munich?

The 18 Bundesliga teams have just four rounds to either overcome poor starts or cement their positions in the table. Then comes the annual Winterpause, during which everyone will have a month to stare at the same standings. Bayern Munich, of course, want to remain undefeated at the top, while Wolfsburg need to prove they’ve really got the goods to unnerve the Bavarians, and Gladbach want to shake off a run of bad results. At the bottom, HSV are trying not to resign themselves to the second division, while Freiburg, Stuttgart and Werder are all hoping to stem the bleeding.

Schalke, now sixth, must be fancying their chances of ending the weekend in the top four. They’re coming off a 4-1 victory over Mainz and Stuttgart are busy trying to escape the drop zone. Then again, the hosts, too, must be feeling a bit confident. They also won 4-1 last weekend, at Freiburg. Plus, they know Schalke play their final match of the Champions League group stage midweek, and anything less than a win means they’re out of the competition. Despite the distance between these two sides, this one really does seem up in the air.

The weekend’s must-watch match pits first against third, with Leverkusen on the rise. They followed their 3-1 win over Hannover with a 5-1 drubbing of Köln last weekend, and any team should be apprehensive about facing such a potent attack. Any team, of course, but Bayern Munich. The Bavarians remain unbeaten in the league, and all they’ll need is one slip from the visitors to put the ball in the back of the net. And because Leverkusen don’t seem to mind conceding goals, that slip will be near inevitable. Problem is, Bayern are highly unlikely to reciprocate: they’ve conceded just three goals thus far this season.

HSV and Mainz both have exactly three wins, yet Hamburg sit dead last, while Mainz are up in tenth, almost within reach of the European positions. Yet it’s the hosts who could well have the edge going into this match. Sure, they lost last weekend, but they’ve got two wins from four, so this marks a turnaround for HSV -- or so they hope. Meanwhile, Mainz got thumped 4-1 by Schalke last time out, and haven’t seen three points in well over a month. They’re sliding, which makes this a perfect opportunity for Hamburg.
