La Liga, Round 24 review: Tear gas attack overshadows the week’s results

It was quite the week in Spain as the top three teams matched results, the relegation battlers took a step in the wrong direction and a frightening moment brought one match to a halt.

It was a week of positives and negatives in Spain. The title race remained tight as all three teams involved won, the race for fourth place and the Europa League tightened.

Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid all won their matches over the weekend in impressive fashion. The three teams combined to score 12 goals, while allowing none. In bit of meaningless but fun trivia, Barca scored in the 2nd minute, Atléti scored in the 3rd and 4th minute while Madrid scored in the 5th minute.

Athletic Bilbao lost for the first time in the league at the new San Mamés against Espanyol, falling 2-1 and failing to take advantage of Villarreal’s loss. Real Sociedad were more than happy to close the gap on their two fellow rivals for fourth, pulling even on points with the Yellow Submarine on 40, within four points of Athletic.

Real Betis failed to take advantage of their two closest relegation rivals both losing, falling yet against against Granada. While Betis remains mathematically alive in the race to avoid dropping to the second division, time and the schedule is working against them with their Europa League campaign continuing this week.

At the Estadio El Madrigal on Sunday, an unknown individual threw a tear gas grenade on the field of play with roughly three minutes left in the 90 minutes. The match was finished after a delay, but the incident caused an evacuation of the stadium and has raised many questions.

Here’s a recap of round 24 in Spain.

Elche 0-0 Osasuna
Atlético Madrid 3-0 Real Valladolid
Levante 1-0 Almeria
Barcelona 6-0 Rayo Vallecano
Villarreal 0-2 Celta Vigo
Granada 1-0 Real Betis
Getafe 0-3 Real Madrid
Athletic Bilbao 1-2 Espanyol
Sevilla 0-0 Valencia
Málaga 0-1 Real Sociedad
