Villarreal fined €6,000, warned over tear gas incident

El Madrigal will remain open in the wake of a tear gas canister being thrown on the pitch at the end of a match earlier this month.

Villarreal were fined €6,000 and warned by the Spanish Football Federation's Competitions Committee as punishment for the tear gas incident at El Madrigal on February 15th against Celta Vigo.

The fine is basically nothing but the real threat came in the letter to the club that stated that El Madrigal would be closed for an unspecified period of time should another serious incident occur. This will put pressure on Villarreal officials to increase security at the stadium in the hopes of preventing any more disruptions that might force a closure of the stadium.

The incident occurred late in the match between Villarreal and Celta Vigo when an as yet unidentified suspect launched a tear has grenade onto the pitch before running out of the stadium. Police continue to search for the suspect who they believe to be a male, approximately five feet, five inches tall.

The match was delayed for 20 minutes and 15 fans required medical attention after exposure to the gas. Villarreal plan to honor fans during this week's match against Real Betis for the calm and civil manner in which they exited the stadium in the wake of the attack.
