Chelsea were in control of the game from the start, but it took them until the 27th minute to stick one in the back of Newcastle's net. Hazard was involved in both the build-up and the finish, making a brilliant turn in the center of the park before spraying the ball wide, then continuing his run. He got onto Branislav Ivanovic's low cross, applying a finish from 12 yards.
Newcastle had a chance to hit back in the 33rd minute, but Moussa Sissoko took a heavy touch after being played in on goal, allowing Petr Cech to block his eventual shot. A minute later, the visitors were made to pay for failing to take that chance. The move for Chelsea's second was finished off by a backheel by Samuel Eto'o, who found Hazard for a simple finish.
An inevitable loss almost turned into an absolute comedy for Newcastle in the 52nd minute, when Tim Krul misjudged a long ball by David Luiz, slipped and fell down, and allowed the ball to bounce over his head. Fortunately for Newcastle, no one from Chelsea could get on the end of the ball, and it bounced wide of the upright.
The final goal of the evening came on a penalty, given away in horrible fashion by substitute Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. Well off the ball during a terrible corner by Frank Lampard, he rugby tackled Eto'o to the ground, which Howard Webb spotted. Hazard stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty to complete a hat trick, and was eventually subbed off to a standing ovation.
