La Liga, Round 28 review: Barcelona makes a statement ahead of El Clásico

The Blaugrana’s emphatic win over Osasuna sent a loud message ahead of next weekend’s clash with league leaders Real Madrid.

Things don’t look remarkably different in the Primera Division table after round 28 but that doesn’t mean there weren’t some meaningful results across the league.

Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid both escaped their respective matches with hard fought 1-0 wins, leaving Los Blancos in first with Atléti three points behind in second. Barcelona remain four points back in third but with El Clásico next weekend, the Blaugrana sent a shot across Madrid's bow with a 7-0 demolition of Osasuna. Gerardo Martino's side had been under some heavy pressure after some poor league results, but they looked like their old selves for the first time in awhile on Sunday. Now they just have to translate that momentum into a win next week.

Athletic Bilbao remained in fourth place and avoided allowing Villarreal to close the gap between the two clubs in the race for fourth place. Aritz Aduriz’s 83rd minute header salvaged a point for Athletic and kept their lead over 5th-placed Real Sociedad at seven points. The Yellow Submarine are eight points back in 6th.

In the relegation battle, Rayo Vallecano took another big step in the right direction with a 3-1 win over Almeria. Rayo moved three points clear of the drop zone while Almeria -- who've now lost three straight league matches -- sunk to 19th, two points behind Getafe in the final safe spot. Real Betis' scoreless draw against Elche did them absolutely no good, as they remain stuck in last place, nine points from safety and all but assured of relegation.

Here’s a recap of all the results from round 28 in Spain.

Atlético Madrid 1-0 Espanyol
