The news has been expected for a while, but now it's official: Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will leave the club at the end of the season. The 35-year-old has been at Barça for almost 20 years and has appeared in almost 600 matches, winning six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues among a host of other individual honours.

He held a press conference Tuesday:
Puyol: I am tired after so many injury problems and operations. The club will rescind my contract.
— AS English (@English_AS) March 4, 2014 While playing for Barcelona, Puyol won a World Cup and a European Championship with Spain in 100 caps for his national side. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that he'll pick up any more international appearances in Brazil this summer, having played only 428 minutes of league football for Barça this season.
Because of that, it’s hardly surprising that Puyol has chosen this season to bring his Barça days to a close. It might not be the end of his career, however, with several recent reports suggesting he’s open to a move to MLS.
