Nils Petersen scores a lovely goal ... in the wrong net

If you ignore the fact the ball went into the wrong net, it’s a really great goal.

Own-goals are never fun for the player that manages to put their ball past their own goalkeeper. It’s embarrassing, and it’s often costly in terms of the result. So of course it’s our job to highlight the best of them so that the unfortunate moment can be properly chronicled for all time.

The latest own-goal worth our attention comes from the Bundesliga where Werder Bremen's Nils Petersen scored a rather aesthetically pleased own-goal against Mainz. If not for the fact the ball went in the wrong net, we'd all likely be celebrating it as one of the better goals of the season. Sadly, we will not.

It really is a great goal. Wonderful control on the header, an unnatural curling path into the top corner that was unstoppable ... but it’s an own-goal. Sigh.

Werder Bremen went on to lose the match 3-0.
