Former FC Barcelona manager and player Tito Vilanova passed away after a long bout with cancer. He was 45 years old. The club announced his passing on Friday.

Former FC Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova has lost his battle with cancer.

— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) April 25, 2014 Vilanova was named Barcelona manager for the 2012-13 season, but had to take a leave of absence to undergo treatment for parotid gland cancer. Upon his return, Barcelona won La Liga to give him his first major honor as a manager. He was expected to coach the club this current season, but was forced to step down shortly before the season started, stating that he did not feel he could fulfill his duties while undergoing treatment.
For much of his professional life, Vilanova was associated with the club. He joined their youth academy in 1984, played for Barcelona B until 1990, then rejoined the club as an assistant coach in 2007.
