Real Betis have become the first team relegated from La Liga in 2014 after Getafe defeated Málaga on Saturday. Getafe's point total of 35 makes escape impossible for Betis, a team that finished in seventh place least season.
Real Betis becomes the first team relegated from La Liga
Real Betis are the first team to be officially relegated to the Segunda División this season.

This is the second time in the past five seasons that Betis have been relegated, the last time was after the 2008/09 season when they finished 18th. It took the Béticos two seasons to make their return to La Liga, winning the Segunda División in 2011 under the leadership of Pepe Mel. Betis finished 13th in their first season back in the top flight, and qualified for the Europa League last season.
Things started poorly for Betis this season, and after a disappointing 4-0 derby loss against Sevilla, along with a late collapse against Rayo Vallecano in December, Pepe Mel was fired.
Things didn’t get any better for Betis as Juan Carlos Garrido -- Mel’s replacement -- lasted only until mid-January, when he was fired and replaced by Gabriel Calderón. All the changes didn’t help, as Betis never looked like a team capable of pulling themselves out of the drop zone.
With just three games remaining in the season, Betis have only five wins against 22 losses and 7 draws.
