Cristiano Ronaldo sets Champions League goalscoring record

Cristiano Ronaldo is better than anyone before him, and he has a record to prove it.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest goalscorer in Champions League history. At least for a single tournament.

The Real Madrid star's goal against Bayern Munich was his 15th of the Champions League season, a new record. And he knew it when he scored it too.

Consider that the Champions League (or its predecessor, the European Cup) is a 59-year-old competition and nobody has ever scored 15 goals in one season before. Not Alfredo Di Stefano, not Ferenc Puskas, not Eusebio, Gerd Muller, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Romario, Raul, Kaka or Lionel Messi. Nobody.

And speaking of Messi, that is the man (along with Jose Altafini, who also scored 14 in one tournament) whose record Ronaldo broke. That can’t be lost on the Portuguese either.

Ronaldo has scored 15 goals in not even 12 full matches. With the rest of the semifinal and the final left to play, we could be looking at a 16 or 17 goal tournament is over.
