Australia get some Dutch flair for World Cup change kit

Australia’s new away kit is very simple in the best way possible, a clean design that draws on both history and one of the best-looking shirts in world soccer for inspiration.

Australia and Nike have unveiled the Socceroos' new away kit. The new shirt is dark obsidian blue and features a yellow collar and details throughout. The shirt is simple in the best way possible for a very clean design. The kit uses the same template that appeared both on the nation's 2014 World Cup home kit as well as Dutch side PSV Eindhoven's home and away kits this season.

The new Australia change kit carries a historical design influence with it, having been inspired by the shirt of the 1974 Socceroos. Speaking about the design, Nike Football Global Creative Director Martin Lotti said:

“We are now used to seeing Australia at the highest levels of international competition as this will be their third consecutive appearance on football’s greatest stage, and so we wanted to create an inspirational kit that looks back and pays homage to the first time they qualified for the world tournament. This new kit reflects the fighting spirit and pioneering can-do attitude of the 1974 national team.”

Tom Rogic, currently at Melbourne Victory (on loan from Celtic), added:

“The team’s comfort and performance on pitch was clearly front of mind when designing the kit. The reference to the 1974 squad in the kit design is a reminder of the history and heritage of the Socceroos, which will give us added motivation in Brasil.”

The shirt is completed by yellow sleeve cuffs, a large shield-style crest, and the Football Federation Australia's logo. Inside the collar are the words "We Socceroos can do the impossible," a quote from 1974 team captain Peter Wilson. The kit comes together with socks and shots in the same blue color. All of the cooling technology pieces from Nike's other World Cup kits are present in this one as well.
