Bayern Munich came away from Old Trafford with a less than optimal result, but they'll like their chances to progress past Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, thanks to their away goal.

United stunned everyone in the first leg with their excellent defensive performance in the first half and Nemanja Vidic's opening goal, but Bayern changed the game once Mario Mandzukic came on as a substitute. He set up Bastian Schweinsteiger's goal, and Bayern are now big favorites after picking up that 1-1 draw.
Still, that’s better than most thought United would fare in the first leg. They’re certainly not worth counting out at this stage, even if they’re pretty significant underdogs. They showed that they had a good idea of how to defend Pep Guardiola’s Bayern, though they might be in for a difficult test if Mandzukic plays from the start in the second leg.
Bayern are looking a bit thin in midfield due to the suspensions of Javi Martinez and Schweinsteiger, along with an injury to Thiago Alcantara. Their absences mean that Philipp Lahm will continue playing as a defensive midfielder instead of as a fullback. This also means that Toni Kroos will have more defensive responsibilities than usual. Additionally, Diego Contento and Xherdan Shaqiri are out, while Holger Badstuber is so forgotten about that he doesn't even show up on injury reports anymore.
Manchester United's injury list doesn't look a lot better. Robin van Persie is still out and Wayne Rooney is nursing a toe injury. If van Persie was fit or this was a league game, he'd probably sit out, but expect him to play through the pain on Wednesday. Rafael and Marouane Fellaini did not train on Tuesday, so don't expect either of them to play. That means Chris Smalling is probably United's starting right back, while it's anyone's guess who will take Fellaini's spot next to Michael Carrick.
