Barcelona turned in another lackluster attacking performance against Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, leading to their exit from Champions League. Los Rojiblancos were brilliant and should have scored more than they did.

Atléti edge out Barça with 2-1 aggregate win

    Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno

It took only five minutes for Atléti to find the game’s only goal, with Diego Simeone’s side rewarded for their phenomenally high-tempo start. Adrián was sent through on goal and cracked the ball against José Pinto’s post, only to nod the ensuing cross down for Koke to tap in from close range.

The visitors somehow managed to weather the remainder of the early storm and settle into their usual rhythm, driving Atléti back toward their own goal. But for all of their possession, Barça struggled to create any chances, and were still very vulnerable on the counterattack. They could’ve easily been two -- or five -- down when Atléti striker Adrián was denied a penalty on the stroke of halftime.

    Koke puts Atléti ahead

Earlier in this move, David Villa struck the crossbar with a powerful strike. Villa’s header over to Koke for the goal came at least 10 seconds after that, as Barcelona failed to make what should have been a couple of routine clearances. Gerardo Martino’s men look like a total mess at the back.

How to watch Barca vs. Atléti

    Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno

Both teams are dealing with significant injury issues, though Atléti’s may hit harder. Diego Costa and Arda Turan have not been training in the build-up to this match. Turan seems highly unlikely to play, while Costa could make the bench with a “break glass in case of emergency” sign on him. In their absences, expect all of David Villa, Raúl Garcia and Jose Sosa to start.
