Bologna relegated from Serie A after loss, Chievo win

The Flying Donkeys’ win over Cagliari means Bologna will spend next season in Serie B.

Davide Ballardini turned out to be not quite the savior Bologna had hoped for. Despite attempting to bring the rossoblu out of the drop zone by drawing their way to safety, Sunday spelled the end for the side. The loss to Catania, combined with Chievo Verona's victory over Cagliari, means that Bologna are relegated.

It's been a tough year for the side. Bologna notched their first win on October 27, bringing their point total to six -- a theme that would continue throughout the season. In spite of the poor start, the club kept faith in Stefano Pioli, who'd been appointed manager in October 2011.

But in January, their patience ran out. After losing to Catania, Pioli was shown the door. In came Ballardini, who brought a dreadfully boring playing style, all in the name of safety. Since his appointment, Bologna failed to score in eleven of their twenty matches. In one particularly mind-numbing stretch, they went eight matches with just three goals -- and all of those were from penalties. So goodbye, Bologna. Sorry to say that after this season, you’ll be missed by few.
