Norwich City lost 2-0 to Arsenal on the final day of the season, but they were all but mathematically relegated before that. Sunderland's win on Wednesday meant they were in an impossible situation.
Norwich City relegated from the Premier League
The Canaries were basically relegated earlier in the week, but it wasn’t confirmed until Saturday.
For most of the Premier League season, Norwich were not in the drop zone. Former manager Chris Hughton didn't take the big step forward that the club was expecting after spending a significant amount of money on strikers Gary Hooper and Ricky van Wolfswinkel, but kept them in 17th place or higher for his entire tenure.
But after six games without a win, Hughton was fired on April 5, following a loss to relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion. Youth coach Neil Adams was appointed as his replacement, and he didn't fare any better. After losing to another relegation rival -- Fulham -- the Canaries lost their next two against big opposition, Liverpool and Manchester City. They drew Chelsea in their most recent game, but Sunderland's mid-week win all but relegated Norwich. They needed to turn around a 17-goal deficit to West Brom to have a chance to stay up.
Thanks to Norwich’s great support, youth setup and frugal ways while they’ve been in the top fight, they’ll have a chance to bounce right back up to the Premier League. But this is bitterly disappointing, given that they were not serious relegation favorites when the season started.
