Catalan giants FC Barcelona have today announced that their star player Lionel Messi has agreed to extend his contract. In a statement on their website, the club revealed:
Messi agrees new Barcelona contract
In the next few days, Lionel Messi will sign a new deal with Barcelona and become the highest-paid player in the history of the sport.

FC Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club as a professional first team player. The revised and updated contract will be signed over the next few days.
While Barcelona have not published details of the contract, reports suggest that Messi will receive €20m a year net; that is, after tax, and presumably before endorsements and image rights are factored in. Already the best-paid player in the world, a deal of this size would put him ahead of the rest by a considerable margin.
This presumably puts an end to the rumours that Messi was unhappy at the club, and also to any chance that one of the lurking, petrodollar-fuelled suitors might be able to pull off something quite ridiculous over the summer. And, with Barcelona playing Atletico Madrid in what is effectively a championship playoff this Saturday, this might just be the fillip the side needs to clinch another La Liga title.
