La Liga, Round 38 review: Atletico Madrid are champions, Real Valladolid and Osasuna relegated

The 2013/14 La Liga season came to a close with a new champion crowned, and the final two relegation spots unhappily claimed.

The curtain has come down on the 2013/14 La Liga season after a busy final weekend that saw Atlético Madrid win their first league title in 18 years, while Osasuna and Real Valladolid were relegated.

Atléti overcame two first half injuries to Diego Costa and Arda Turan, and a stunning goal from Alexis Sánchez, to earn a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou. Defender Diego Godín was the hero, heading home an equalizer early in the second half that secured the point, and the championship.

Real Madrid finished the league season with a 3-1 win over Espanyol, only good enough for a third place finish behind Barcelona. Athletic Bilbao closed with a scoreless draw against Almeria, but they'd already secured fourth place.

Villarreal and Real Socieded both closed their seasons with 59 points after a 2-1 win for Villarreal in their final day meeting. Neither team was able to catch Sevilla in fifth place, but the Yellow Submarine claimed sixth place thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker against La Real. All three teams will represent Spain in next season's Europa League, with Sevilla entering in the group stages. Villarreal will join during the playoff round, while La Real will start in the third round.

At the bottom of the table, Real Betis -- who were already relegated -- will be joined in the Segunda División by Osasuna and Real Valladolid. This is the first time Betis has been relegated since 2009 (they spent two seasons in the second division before earning promotion). Osasauna's relegation ends a run of 14 season in the top flight, while Valladolid were the only team promoted last season to fall right back out of La Liga.

Here’s a recap of the results from round 38 in Spain:

Real Sociedad 1-2 Villarreal
