Luis Enrique named Barcelona head coach

The former Barcelona striker returns to the club, this time as the manager.

Barcelona have wasted little time finding a replacement in the wake of Gerardo Martino’s departure, naming Luis Enrique as the new head coach of the Blaugrana.

Enrique managed Barcelona B for three seasons before spending a season at Roma and Celta Vigo. The 44-year-old was one of the names discussed as a possible replacement for Pep Guardiola before the Martino hiring.

Enrique, a former midfielder/striker, played for Barca from 1996 to 2004, making 207 appearances with 73 goals. He also earned 62 caps with the Spanish national team over an 11-year period. He replaced Guardiola as the head coach of Barcelona B when Pep moved up to the senior team, and many will likely say he should have been the man to replace Guardiola in the first place last season.

In 2011, Enrique signed a two-year deal with AS Roma but he left the job of his own accord after just one unsuccessful season in the Italian capital. He returned to Spain and took the top job at Celta Vigo, leading them to a ninth-place finish in the league, the club’s best finish in the top division since 2006.
