David Luiz reportedly set for record Paris Saint-Germain move

David Luiz is apparently on the brink of becoming the most expensive defender of all time, and Chelsea are laughing all the way to the bank.

According to multiple outlets, David Luiz is on the brink of becoming the world’s most expensive defender thanks to some extravagant spending from Paris Saint-Germain. The French club are apparently set to break the £36 million record they set by signing Thiago Silva from AC Milan back in 2012, by completing a £40m move for his compatriot.

It's unlikely that Chelsea would've been looking to shift Luiz this summer, given the Brazilian is actually a much better defender than many give him credit for. He's also handy in his versatility; José Mourinho has trusted him to play as a defensive midfielder in many big games this season. However, is he the best defender in the world? His all-too-regular lapses in concentration and poor runs of form suggest not.

Because of that, the £40m offer is honestly too good for Chelsea to even consider rejecting. The Blues will be able to bring in one or two replacements at that price, and next season will definitely have Nemanja Matić able to fill the Luiz-shaped hole in defensive midfield in the Champions League -- after being cup-tied this season. They will also have enough depth at centre-back, should wunderkind Kurt Zouma return to his parent club after spending the season at Saint-Étienne.

Sure, PSG will get themselves a very good defender. But make no mistake, the real winners in this transfer are Chelsea.
