Arsene Wenger extends Arsenal contract

The Gunners manager signs a new deal, and will stay with the club until 2017.

Steve Bardens

Good news, Arsenal fans. Arsene Wenger has signed a new deal with Arsenal to extend his contract until the end of the 2016/17 season. This decision follows just a few weeks after the FA Cup Final, in which Arsenal and Wenger ended their nine-year wait for a trophy, and puts an end to season-long speculation that this season might prove to be his last.

Already Arsenal's longest-serving manager, should he see this contract out he will have been in charge of the London club for 21 years. So far he has lifted the Premier League title three times, most recently in 2004, along with five FA Cups and three Charity Shields. While he has never won a European trophy while in London, he took Arsenal to the final of the 2006 Champions League, where they lost to Barcelona.

With the a new side emerging at the Emirates stadium, a side built around the young core of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, he and Arsenal fans will be hoping that the next few seasons sees Arsenal finally mount the serious title challenge that has been missing over the last few seasons.
