David Villa’s stay at Atletico Madrid lasted one season. The Spaniard announced that he will leave the club this summer and, according to multiple reports, he will sign with New York City FC.
David Villa leaves Atletico Madrid, reportedly to sign with NYCFC
NYCFC appears to have landed their first Designated Player.

Villa had been linked to NYCFC and he was spotted in Manchester undergoing a medical at the end of the week, which seemed to seal his move. NYCFC are owned by Manchester City, so a medical in Manchester would make sense.
The 32-year-old is coming off of a 13-goal season for Atletico, one that saw him help the club win La Liga. In his departure from Atletico, Villa said he was leaving for “an irresistible project for me and my family.”
The biggest question for Villa may be what he will do until February 2015. NYCFC’s debut season isn’t until next year so all of the NYCFC players will have time before they start playing again. A player like Villa could be loaned back to Atletico until the start of next year’s MLS season or they could spend the next eight months training with Manchester City, but that doesn’t seem to be the preferred option.
Villa may not be the lone big name signing up for NYCFC. Frank Lampard was released by Chelsea and was also spotted in Manchester, spurring speculation that he will also sign with the MLS club.
