The Kits

The day's opening match was a pleasant surprise and the kits were no different. On the pitch, Colombia's shirts were instantly recognizable while Greece's were very classy with an understated design.

Costa Rica's kits didn't look any better on the pitch than they did in our rankings ahead of the tournament. Unfortunately, the quality of Uruguay's uniforms didn't transfer to the pitch for them as they lost 1-3 to Costa Rica

Italy's blue Puma kits really stood out with their contemporary designs bearing classic touches. England's white Nike kits, like the team's tactics, failed to make their mark however.

Côte d'Ivoire's traditional orange kits really stood out in Brazil as did the play of Les Éléphants. Japan's home kits with their flashes of deep pink made an impression but it wasn't enough for Samurai Blue.>

The Boots

Colombia’s Cristian Zapata switched out of his Lotto Solista boots into a pair of Stadia Potenza V’s from the Italian brand. The boots were unveiled by Lotto just a few days ago.

Costa Rica’s Oscar Granados (center) wore a pair of Lotto boots as well, opting for the summer colorway of the reflective Solista silo.

Joe Hart suited up in an intriguing pair of Umbro UX-1 boots in a Blackberry / Safety Yellow colorway. The UX-1s one-piece upper construction features webbing across the material to aid with control while a clever A-frame design in the back half of the boot provides support for the player.

Japan's lone goal scorer, Keisuke Honda, took to the pitch in a very sharp-looking pair of Mizuno's Wave Ignitus Gold boots. The boots did their job in the 16th minute when Honda controlled a low pass inside the area and rifled the ball into the top corner at the near post with his second touch.

Japan’s Shinji Okazaki also wore Mizuno boots, opting for the synthetic Basara speed boot, which had been unveiled by Mizuno just a few weeks ago.
