Police in Nigeria have confirmed that an explosion has taken place in the northeastern town of Damaturu, where fans were gathered to watch the 2014 World Cup.

Al-Jazeera has reported fatalities, although there is no official word on how bad the situation has become. Sanusi Ruf’ai, the police commissioner for Yobe state, spoke to AFP about the incident, saying: “There was an explosion outside a soccer viewing centre here in Damaturu at around 8:15 p.m. [local time]. Our men have deployed to the scene but it’s too early for us to give details.”

The Nigerian government recently advised people to avoid gathering in public to watch the World Cup amid fears of attacks, and the regional authorities of Adamawa, also in northeast Nigeria, closed down all World Cup viewing centers. That area of the country has been devastated by similar attacks in recent months, and is one of the most troubled regions in the West African country.
