Spain vs. Chile, 2014 World Cup: Lineups

Spain have dropped Xavi and Gerard Pique for their game against Chile, but Diego Costa and Iker Casillas retain their places in the Champions’ starting XI.

Iker Casillas and Diego Costa have kept their places in the Spain squad, but Xavi and Gerard Pique have been dropped in place of David Silva and Javi Martinez respecticely.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was under huge pressure to ring the changes after a disastrous 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands left their game against Chile a must-win encounter, and although Casillas was one of the worst performers in that game, he has kept his place. Xavi and Gerard Pique have not been so lucky.

Chile, meanwhile, move to a 3-5-2 formation, bringing in Francisco Silva into their central defence and surprisingly dropping key creator Jorge Valdivia.

Spain starting lineup (4-3-3): Iker Casillas; Cesar Azpilicueta, Javi Martínez, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba; Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta; Pedro, David Silva, Diego Costa.

Chile starting lineup (3-5-2): Claudio Bravo; Gonzalo Jara, Francisco Silva, Gary Medel; Eugenio Mena, Charles Aránguiz, Marcelo Díaz, Arturo Vidal, Mauricio Isla; Eduardo Vargas, Alexis Sánchez
