New York City FC announced the singing of David Villa on Monday, after a week of speculation and rumors about the Spanish striker coming to MLS. The club made the announcement via Twitter and their club website.

Several club officials, including team CEP Ferran Soriano, head coach Jason Kreis, and sporting director Claudio Reyna spoke with the team’s website about the signing, all expressing excitement at the news.

“This is a historic and exciting moment for the City family and the building of New York City Football Club,” said City CEO Ferran Soriano. “I know David really well; he is one of the best footballers in the world, a true winner and in an outstanding moment of his career. I’m sure New Yorkers will enjoy watching him play for their city.”

Kreis talked up Villa's ability.

“David Villa is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished soccer players and best strikers in the world, I couldn’t be happier that we have acquired such an amazing talent as our first-ever signing. David will be a shining example of what it will mean to be a New York City player and a leader for us on and off the field.”

Reyna called Villa “the perfect first signing” and talked up Villa’s career accomplishments.

Villa is the all-time leading scorer for the Spanish national team, and the first Spanish player to score 50 international goals. He's won three La Liga titles, including this season with Atlético Madrid, and a Champions League title with Barcelona.

While there’s not club jersey yet, the team announced that Villa will wear the number seven for NYCFC.
