France 5, Switzerland 2: Les Bleus crush sorry Swiss

Switzerland and France meet on Friday knowing that three points would probably be enough to move them into the Round of 16. Considering that the second-place team in Group E will likely have to face Argentina in the first knockout round, ending up on top could be important.

The French had a fairly easy opening match, dispatching a rather awful Honduras side behind a brace from Karim Benzema. The Real Madrid striker will likely be looking forward to lining up against a Swiss defense that had some scary moments against Ecuador.

Didier Deschamps is not expected to change his lineup from the first match, though there’s been talk that he might try to find a way to get Olivier Giroud on the pitch. Since that would likely force Benzema outside, the move doesn’t make much sense.

Switzerland needed a 93rd-minute goal from Haris Seferovic to earn a 2-1 win over Ecuador. Speed on the counter attack was key to the Swiss pulling out a victory, and they'll need more of that against the French. Ottmar Hitzfeld will have to decide whether or not to give starts to Valentin Stocker and Granit Xhaka again. Both players were ineffective against Ecuador, with Stocker being replaced at halftime by Admir Mehmedi, who was involved with Switzerland's first goal.
