Italy could be without central midfielder Daniele De Rossi for their crunch match against Uruguay in Group D on Tuesday. De Rossi sustained a hamstring problem in the Azzurri's shock defeat to Costa Rica, and Italy's team doctor Enrico Castellacci has reportedly described his chances of making the game as "very unlikely."

Fortunately the injury isn't said to be anything serious, with Castellacci saying De Rossi would only need a few days to recover. However, that will be of scant consolation to Italy coach Cesare Prandelli if his side lose to Uruguay, which would see the 2006 World Cup winners eliminated at the first hurdle.

As it stands, Thiago Motta would likely fill in for De Rossi at the heart of Italy’s midfield, where he’s tasked with breaking up opposition attacks in between a couple of less defensively-minded players. That would probably pave the way for playmaker Marco Verratti to return to the starting lineup after he was dropped ahead of Italy’s defeat to Costa Rica.
