Cesare Prandelli announced he has resigned from his position as head coach of the Italian national team, effective immediately. The decision came less than an hour after Italy was eliminated from the 2014 World Cup at the hands of Uruguay:

Prandelli took over Italy in the wake of the 2010 World Cup, replacing Marcelo Lippi after the Italians finished last in Group F with just two points. Things didn't go much better in 2014 as Italy won their opener, but then struggled in two straight losses to Costa Rica and Uruguay.

The head of the Italian Football Federataion, Giancarlo Abete, has reportedly resigned as well, but not before asking Prandelli to reconsider his decision:

This is the first time since that Italy has failed to progress past the Group Stage in two straight World Cups since 1962 and 1966.
