Antonio Valencia sent off for Ecuador

Ecuador vs. France hasn’t really kicked off yet, which isn’t much of a surprise. France don’t need to do anything more than draw to secure top spot in Group E, and while Ecuador need to win they don’t have the talent to go after the leaders.

It’s going to get even more difficult for the South Americans after captain Antonio Valencia was sent off early in the second half for this foul on Lucas Digne:

Yikes. Valencia’s foot slips off the ball and gives the left back a pretty nasty raking up his leg. The referee took his time to check Digne out and consult his assistants, but the outcome was never really in doubt: it’s a straight red, and Ecuador’s difficult task just became much worse.
