Brazil and Chile could not be separated by 120 minutes of soccer, and require a penalty shootout to determine who will advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. The two sides both scored in the first half, but the last 90 minutes have been scoreless, and they'll conduct a shootout after their 1-1 draw.

David Luiz put Brazil on the board early, but Alexis Sanchez came up with an equalizer. The 45 minutes or so after Sanchez’s equalizer were very even, but Chile began to tire about 80 minutes into the match. Their star, Arturo Vidal, still isn’t fully fit after recovering from a knee injury and had to exit in the 86th minute. Gary Medel also came up injured late, with Jose Rojas replacing him in stoppage time.
But despite Chile's fatigue, Brazil haven't been able to take advantage. They've been well on top for some time, and they'll be disappointed that they were not able to score a second goal to win this match without going to a shootout.
As a reminder, penalties are best of five, and completed when one team is no longer mathematically able to beat the other in five rounds of penalties. If the teams are tied after five rounds, they go to sudden death, where each team takes a penalty until one team scores and the other misses in the same round.
