Nigel De Jong out of the World Cup with groin injury

The Dutch midfielder will miss the rest of his team’s campaign after suffering a groin injury in the win over Mexico.

Nigel de Jong's World Cup has come to an end after he was diagnosed with a groin tear, picked up in the Netherlands victory over Mexico. The KNVB announced the news via Twitter, saying De Jong is expected to be sidelined between two and four weeks.

De Jong started the match against Mexico on Saturday, but lasted only nine minutes before limping off in pain. While it could be theoretically possible for De Jong to recover and be available if the Dutch were to make it to the final, it seems highly unlikely that he’d be able to play.

The AC Milan player is a notorious figure in the sport of soccer, having famously avoided a red card in the 2010 World Cup final after executing a martial arts-esque kick to the chest of Spain's Xabi Alonso. Referee Howard Webb only gave De Jong a yellow card.
