David Letterman asks Clint Dempsey stupid soccer questions

“Late Night” host lives down to expectations, but Dempsey handles it well enough.

David Letterman's "Late Show" has a lot of viewers, like about 3 million on a pretty average night. So, it's not surprising that given a chance to parade Clint Dempsey in front of all those people, Major League Soccer jumped at the chance.

But the downside to playing to such a wide, not-necessarily-soccer-savvy audience is that some really stupid questions are invariably going to be asked. Letterman lived down to that expectation.

All the cliche questions about low scoring and faking injuries were asked and, to his credit, Dempsey played along and did his best to answer. It was all in good fun, I suppose, but it was just a sad commentary on how much basic education people like Letterman feel the American public needs at this point.

On the plus side, Dempsey was greeted by a rather raucous rendition of everyone’s favorite American song, “USA, USA, USA, USA, USA (repeat infinity).” Letterman also plugged Sunday’s Sounders-Timbers game which is expected to draw 60,000 plus. So, it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
