Kit history says Germany will beat Argentina

If kit history is any indication, Germany will beat Argentina in the World Cup final.

SB Nation's 2014 World Cup Final Preview

Germany and Argentina have met in the World Cup final twice before. The first time came in 1986, when Argentina came out on top, but four years later Germany got their revenge and were crowned champions of the world.

Now they are set to meet again for the World Cup title, this time in Brazil. And if kit history has taught us anything it is that Germany will win.

When Jose Luis Brown, Jorge Valdano and Jorge Burruchaga scored to fire Argentina past Germany in the 1986 final, they did it in Argentina's classic light blue and white striped kits. Diego Maradona held the trophy over his head and Germany watched on, looking at what could have been while wearing their green change kits.

Four years later, it was Germany in their home kits. Andreas Brehme converted from the penalty spot in the 85th minute and the Germans came out ahead, 1-0, looking resplendent in their white tops. Argentina, who had come so close to winning consecutive World Cups, watched on in their blue change kits.

So far, the home kits are 2-for-2 in Germany vs. Argentina finals. And guess who is in their home kits for this final?

Germany.

If you believe in the power of kits, Germany look set to capture their fourth World Cup title.

Or maybe you believe in the power of the players who actually play. That’s a radical approach, but in that case, ignore kit history.
