Yes, they really put a bird on the 2014 MLS All-Star kit

All-Star shirt features several nods to Portland and the Timbers, including one that seems to be acknowledging a pop culture meme.

The annual MLS All-Star game has become a way for both the league and adidas, one of its primary sponsors, to show the country the best of what is on offer. While the match itself features a squad of arguably the best players in the league, it gives adidas the chance to try something new and different with a kit that will be worn for only one match.

This year’s match takes place in Portland against Bayern Munich on August 6 and the league’s kit sponsor has prepared something special for the occasion. The new All-Star kit features a number of subtle touches that pay tribute to the city of Portland and the history of the Timbers.

The new shirt is black with vibrant yellow trim and is directly inspired by the host town’s team and their use of those two colors in the past. The shirt features a series of tight, embossed chevrons that run up the body from the hem to the shoulders with a pattern that’s off-center but leading up to the All-Star crest on the left side of the chest. The chevrons are a direct link to the Timbers’ badges, both past and present.

Based on the template that Argentina used for their home kit during the World Cup this summer, the new shirt features a number of accents that honor the city of Portland and the state of Oregon. On the inside of the collar is green neck tape bearing the words “2014 All-Star Game” and the city’s famous roses. Under the crest, on the inside of the shirt, is Oregon’s state bird, the Western Meadowlark in bright yellow. There’s also a better-than-zero chance that the bird is a callback to a rather well-known “Portlandia” skit. The jock tag in the bottom left at the front of the shirt features Mount Hood and the words “Rose City” underneath it.
