The much rumored moved of England international midfielder Frank Lampard to New York City FC was made official on Thursday. Major League Soccer's 20th expansion team formally announced the arrival of Lampard at a community event at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Lampard expressed his excitement about joining NYCFC and coming to play in MLS.

“I am really excited about joining New York City FC and helping to play a real part in building something special in one of the sporting capitals of the world,” said Lampard. “The passion of the nation’s fans at the World Cup was second to none and I am looking forward to meeting New Yorkers and tapping into their love of the game. It is a privilege to be able to help make history here in New York City - I just can’t wait to get started and be part of it.”

The 36-year-old midfielder played in 648 matches for Chelsea, becoming the team's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals. He helped lead the club to three EPL titles, four FA cups, and the Blues' first ever Champions League win in 2012. He's also played in three World Cups, earning 103 caps with the England national team.

Lampard is NYCFC’s second designated player, they signed David Villa earlier this summer, and will join the club ahead of their inaugural season in 2015.

As per MLS policy, details of the contract were not announced.
