Memo Ochoa signs with Malaga

Malaga have their replacement for Willy Caballero.

Laurence Griffiths

Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa was a World Cup star, and now he is a Malaga player. The Mexico signed a three-year contract with the La Liga club on a free transfer after his contract with Ajaccio expired.

Ochoa was anointed Mexican soccer’s golden boy when he made his Club America debut at 18 years old and first national team cap two years later. But after a sparkling start to his career, Ochoa struggled with consistency and his commitment was questioned. Still a talented and sometimes great goalkeeper for America, Ochoa had lost his starting spot for Mexico, but Ajaccio signed him in 2011 and it was then that he began to really shine. He was brilliant for the French side and by the start of the 2014 World Cup, was Mexico’s starter again.

The World Cup proved to be Ochoa’s breakout tournament. He was phenomenal, winning Man of the Match honors against Brazil, and then again in the round of 16 as Mexico lost to the Netherlands.

With Ajaccio having already admitted that the goalkeeper would leave on a free transfer in the summer and Ochoa a global darling for his World Cup showings, the competition for the Mexican figured to be hot. At one time, he seemed destined to sign with Arsenal, but that never materialized. That is when Malaga, in need of a goalkeeper after Willy Caballero left for Manchester City, swooped in to sign him.
