Arsenal vs. Manchester City: Final score 3-0, Gunners bombard City to win Community Shield

Arsenal’s offense put on a show as the Gunners demolished Manchester City at Wembley.

Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday at Wembley Stadium, claiming the 2014 Community Shield. Santi Carzola, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud did the damage for the Gunners as a depleted City side didn’t put up much of a fight.

Arsenal took control of the match from the openings whistle, but it took them a little while to finally break down Manchester City's defense.

The deserved opening goal arrived in the 21st minute when Santi Carzola picked up the ball on the edge of the City box and made a wicked cutback that froze Gael Clichy momentarily. The Spanish midfielder took advantage, placing a shot through the defenders legs that eluded Will Caballero inside the far post.

The Gunners doubled their lead in the 42nd minute when Yaya Sanogo received a pass on the move into the area, and fought off Fernando, giving time for Aaron Ramsey to catch up on a supporting run. Sanogo found Ramsey with a short pass and the Welshman did the rest, firing a shot past Caballero to make it 2-0.

City finally generated a legitimate scoring chance early in the second half when Stevan Jovetić headed a Jesus Navas cross off the near post. Jovetić jumped on the rebound, but his second effort from a tough angle went off target.

Jovetić had another good chance a couple minutes later when a cutback by Aleksandar Kolarov found him in space in front of goal. His quick shot was on target, but Wojciech Szczęsny was in the right spot and smothered the attempt.

Arsenal had an answer to the pressure in the 60th minute when Olivier Giroud sent a suburb shot up and over the outstretched hands of Cabellero to make it 3-0. Despite the presence of three City players around the French striker, no one closed him down, leaving Giroud with the space he needed to get his shot off. It appeared on the replay that the ball took a slight deflection off the boot of Matija Nastasić.
