Javi Martinez tears ACL, Bayern Munich star out through December

Bayern Munich will be without star defender/midfielder Javi Martinez for the rest of 2014.

Christof Koepsel

Bayern Munich midfielder/defender Javi Martinez went down with a knee injury in the DFL-Supercup on Wednesday, and it's about as bad as it could have been. The club has confirmed that Martinez has torn his ACL and that he will fly to the United States to have surgery shortly.

Martinez picked up the injury trying to win an attacking set piece just before the half-hour mark of the game against Borussia Dortmund. He collided with a Dortmund defender, landed awkwardly, and then was immediately substituted. His leg was strapped down and he was in visible distress as he was carried off, so this news doesn't come as much of a shock.

The club say that Martinez will miss at least the rest of 2014. The good news is that the Bundesliga has a lengthy winter break, so it’s possible that Martinez could be available to play almost the entire second half of the season and Champions League knockout stages.
