Aston VIlla announced the signing of Carlos Sanchez from La Liga side Elche on Friday, after a week of speculation about a possible deal. Sanchez spent one season with the Spanish club, making 30 appearances. He also played in four of Colombia’s five matches at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The deal is reportedly with just under £5 million, with the money going to both Elche and Sanchez's third-party owners. He has agreed to a four-year contract with Aston Villa, according to the club's Twitter account.

Sanchez, nicknamed La Roca (Spanish for ‘The Rock’), is a physical defensive midfielder, and just the type of player Villa has been missing for the past couple seasons.

He began is professional career at River Plate, before joining French side Valenciennes in 2007. He signed with Elche last summer after they earned promotion to the top flight of Spanish football.
