DFB-Pokal: Bayern Munich advances, Augsburg crashes out

Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim and other Bundesliga sides all advanced to the second round with wins on Sunday.

The third of four DFB-Pokal first round match days wrapped up on Sunday with several more top flight clubs booking spots in the next round.

Bayern bounced back from their German Super Cup loss against Borussia Dortmund with a 4-1 victory over Preussen Munster. The defending champions spread the goals around with four different players -- Mario Götze, Thomas Müller, David Alaba and Claudio Pizarro -- scoring.

Werder Bremen were nearly embarrassed by fourth division side FV Illertissen, but managed to survive in extra time. Bremen took the lead in the 4th minute when Izet Hajrovic converted a penalty, but 20 minutes later Moritz Nebel equalized for Illertissen. The match stayed tied at 1-1 through 90 minutes, and extra time was required. Bremen scored twice in the first 15 minutes to take a 3-1 lead, and held off a late surge to claim a 3-2 victory.

TSG Hoffenheim earned the most lopsided victory of the day as they hammered Uhlenhorster SC Paloma 9-0. Sven Schipplock led the way with an absurd tally of five goals on the day. Fellow Bundesliga sides Freiburg and Wolfsburg advanced as well.

Augsburg from the Bundesliga was eliminated on Sunday as they lost 1-0 against FC Magdeburg from the fourth tier of German football. Fellow top flight club Paderborn were knocked out as well in extra time by second division side RB Leipzig.
