Schalke’s DFB-Pokal dream is already over. The team was beaten, 2-1, by third division side Dynamo Dresden in the first round of the competition on Monday, bringing more pessimism to a club that has been criticized for a lack of summer acquisitions.
DFB-Pokal: Schalke eliminated by third division team, Hamburg barely advances
Schalke’s season isn’t off to a good start, and Hamburg almost met the same fate.

Dynamo scored on a 24th minute penalty and then again just after halftime so while Schalke pulled a goal back late, it wasn’t enough. Now Dynamo, who were relegated from the 2. Bundesliga last season, are onto the second round.
Hamburg flirted with being the second Bundesliga team to fall to a third division team, but they were just barely able to advance. Energie Cottbus played Hamburg to a 2-2 draw through 120 minutes, but the Bundesliga side were able to prevail, 4-1 on penalties.
