Champions League scores: Celtic stunned, Porto and Zenit St. Petersburg advance

Celtic were knocked out by Maribor while Proto and Zenit St. Petersburg cruised into the group stages. Here’s a recap of Tuesday’s action.

The big story of the day was Celtic lost 1-0 at home against Maribor and find themselves eliminated from the Champions League 2-1 on aggregate. Marcos Tavaras was the hero for the visitors as his goal 15 minutes from time put them into the group stages for just the second time in club history.

Porto finished off Lille with a 2-0 win on Tuesday, advancing to the group stage with a 3-0 aggregate win over the French side.

Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg advanced to the group stages with a convincing 4-0 aggregate win over Standard Liege. After a 1-0 victory in the first leg, Zenit returned home and rolled to a 3-0 victory with a goal from José Rondon and a brace from Hulk.

Apoel Nicosia advanced as well with a 4-0 demolition of AaB to win their tie 5-1 on aggregate. BATE Borisov also got a big second leg win defeating Slovan Bratislava 3-0 to earn a 4-1 aggregate victory.
